The process of extinction is related to the disappearance of species or groups of species in a given environment or ecosystem. Similar to the emergence of new species, extinction is a natural event: species arise through speciation events (long geographic isolation, followed by genetic differentiation) and disappear due to extinction events
(natural disasters, emergence of more efficient competitors).
